Local climate solutions powered by faith communities

Get Involved in Advocacy!

Ready to put your faith into action? We have two time-sensitive opportunities for you to voice your values and advocate for meaningful climate action in our community. Please act quickly! We also have an educational opportunity so you can get equipped to testify!

Vote Yes on the Plastic Bag Tax

A resolution to implement a 5-cent tax on some plastic bags will be voted upon during the next meeting of the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday, September 14, starting at 9:30 a.m. Plastic manufacturers, some business groups, and others that want to maintain the status quo are already hard at work to defeat it. Now is the time for us all to speak up.

Learn more about the issue and contact your Supervisor using our easy action alert form!

Fairfax County Photo Petition

The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors will vote to accept the Community-wide Energy and Climate Action Plan (CECAP) at their meeting on Tuesday, September 14, and then the real action will begin. We want to send them off on this critical work with a clear message: Fairfax County can and must be a leader on solving the climate crisis. Thank you for this action plan. Now it's time to go big on climate solutions!

Learn how to get involved in our first ever photo petition and help us make it a huge success!

Photo Petition Tips

We have step-by-step instructions, which include a link to find out who your Supervisor is, and we've pre-written some message ideas for you. We also have a template you can print, fill out, and draw on if you don't want to design a sign yourself.

Get creative! Parents and pet owners, go to town! Involve them in your sign-making and/or selfie. Own a rain garden or electric vehicle? Feature it in your photo! Can a group from your faith community safely gather with masks and stand in front of your building/sign?

Have fun with it. (And, if you have a small toddler or excitable puppy, maybe allow yourself a little extra time to get that perfect shot.)

Learn How to Testify!

Testifying (either live in person, via the phone, or by pre-submitting a video) is the best way to be sure your message is heard. Though it might seem daunting at first, it really only requires three easy steps: Sign up, Write up, and Show up! Interested in taking the next step in your advocacy journey? Attend an educational webinar on Thursday, September 9 at 5:00 p.m. featuring Andrea McGimsey, FACS' Executive Director, and Renee Grebe, Audubon Naturalist Society's Northern Virginia Conservation Advocate. We encourage you to apply what you learn -- you have the chance to testify on September 14 when Fairfax County's Board of Supervisors hold a public hearing on a potential plastic bag fee.

Sign up to attend the workshop on how to testify.
