Local climate solutions powered by faith communities.

Measurement Day Was a HUGE Success!

On Thursday, July 16, more than 80 passionate citizen scientists across Northern Virginia took to the roads on one of this summer's hottest days to collect temperature and humidity data. This "Measurement Day" is part of phase one of FACS' Urban Heat Island Mapping Project, in partnership with George Mason University's Virginia Climate Center.

Check out our recap to see our volunteers in action and a sneak peek at what's coming next (a.k.a. our Climate Crisis Forum).

Looking Back at 2025 with Our Annual Report

“FACS is rooted in a powerful idea: people of faith and goodwill can come together to advance local solutions to the urgent moral challenge of climate change.” — Scott Peterson, FACS Co-Founder & Board Chair

2025 was a year of growth and expanding influence for FACS. We launched our Clergy Council, welcomed our first full-time Advocacy Director, and strengthened our work across Northern Virginia and in Richmond. Our 9th annual Climate Crisis Forum brought together experts to examine rapid data center growth and its potential impact on consumer electricity bills. Our work is far from over, but we are moving in the right direction.

Welcome Our Newest Clergy Council Member: Rev. Dr. Janine Howard

Rev. Dr. Janine Howard has faithfully served as lead pastor at Fairlington UMC, Alexandria, since 2019. Her service in The United Methodist Church began in 1993 on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. She holds both a Master of Divinity and Doctor of Ministry from Wesley Theological Seminary and earned her undergraduate degree in Biology and History.

A dedicated advocate for creation care, Janine is a Virginia Certified Master Naturalist with the Arlington Regional Master Naturalists and previously served on the Virginia Conference (UMC) Board of Church and Society Creation Care Committee. Two of the churches she has served received a Green Church Award. Outside of ministry, Janine enjoys exploring Virginia State Parks and completed the Virginia State Parks Trail Quest Challenge in 2023 with her canine companion, Kobi.

CITY OF HARRISONBURG (CENTRAL VALLEY)

Renew Rocktown collaborated with the Shenandoah Valley Black Heritage Project to organize an Energy Check program in Harrisonburg's Northeast neighborhood. The event featured a home energy audit demonstration and information about simple, affordable ways to reduce energy use and lower utility bills. Participants built their own energy efficiency kits to take home and learned about local energy-saving resources and programs. It was a family-friendly event with hot dogs, snacks, and activities for children.

CITY OF ALEXANDRIA

The Hub enjoyed gathering in person for a summer potluck in July, reconnecting over good food, conversation, and updates on FACS' work across the region. Hub Co-Leaders Steve Walz and Donna Gold were instrumental in the success of the Urban Heat Island Mapping Project. Steve coordinated volunteer efforts across Alexandria and Arlington County while Donna joined fellow volunteers on Measurement Day to collect critical temperature data in the community.

The Hub is also excited to share that the City of Alexandria's Office of Climate Action is expanding their new Plug In Alexandria and Step2Savings programs to houses of worship, offering free technical assistance and funding support for EV charging infrastructure and energy-saving upgrades. See upcoming Hub emails for more information.

📍Upcoming Meeting: Wednesday, September 9, at 7 PM via Zoom. Sign up for the “City of Alexandria” FACS Hub’s mailing list to get connected!

ARLINGTON COUNTY

Our Arlington Hub was proud to have many enthusiastic volunteers, including County Board members Susan Cunningham and Takis Karantonis, collect weather data with us on Measurement Day for FACS' Urban Heat Island Mapping Project! Throughout the summer, the Hub has continued engaging with County and School Board leaders to advocate for greater transparency, identify opportunities to accelerate the phaseout of fossil fuels, and tracking progress in meeting the County's climate and environmental goals in all capital improvement projects.

FACS' Monthly Sustainability Tip

When temperatures soar, cooling centers provide free, air-conditioned spaces where you can escape the heat. Stay hydrated, check on vulnerable neighbors, and find a location near you using the Virginia Department of Health's Cooling Centers Map.
