| Staff Update: Farewell & Gratitude to Claudia “My favorite part of FACS was being able to help congregations access resources and funding for upgrades that would have otherwise been more challenging to find. It was inspiring to see them become empowered to better support their communities and the environment.” After serving as our Community Engagement Manager, Claudia Saunders is moving on to her next chapter. During her time at FACS, Claudia was instrumental in helping houses of worship access resources and funding for energy upgrades through our Power of Faith program. We are deeply grateful for her dedication and wish her all the best in her journey ahead. |

|
| Fight Against Dominion Energy’s 6 New Gas Plants! Tue & Thurs | August 19 & 28 | 6–8 PM | @Lubber Run Community Center & City of Fairfax Public Library Write comments while eating pizza to the VA Department of Environmental Quality and the State Corporation Commission to oppose Dominion Energy’s proposal to build 6 new methane gas plants in Virginia. This is in opposition to the Virginia Clean Economy Act that mandates relying on renewable energy and existing nuclear power plants by 2045. An alternative portfolio of clean energy, storage, and energy efficiency could meet the same amount of energy demand as the first proposed plant at less than half the cost. The comment writing party may be available virtually and there will be materials to make posters for a rally in September. If you are unable to attend, find resources and the comment form here. |

| | - Sales Tax Holiday: Starting today, Virginia’s sales tax holiday runs through August 3, 2025. You can buy qualifying school supplies, clothing, footwear, hurricane and emergency preparedness items, and Energy Star™ and WaterSense™ products without paying sales tax.
- Surveillance: Federal authorities used Virginia’s surveillance network (Flock Safety automatic license plate readers) for about 50 immigration-related enforcement searches in at least five counties, including Fairfax and Loudoun, between June 2024–April 2025—despite restrictions on such surveillance practices.
- Energy: Virginians could see electricity bills rise by another 5%, as the state—home to one-third of the world’s energy-intensive data centers—is the top energy importer in the country, with 36% of its power coming from other states in 2023. This ongoing reliance on out-of-state electricity, combined with soaring demand, is creating mounting challenges to keeping energy affordable for consumers.
- Public Transit: Metro funding could emerge as a divisive issue in this year’s Arlington County Board race as the five candidates on the November 4 ballot hold differing views on whether the county should contribute additional local funding toward regional transit—especially as Northern Virginia may soon be responsible for an additional $150–$180 million in annual funding for the system, on top of the $800 million already spent each year.
- Recycling: Loudoun County is opening the new Sterling Recycling Center in Claude Moore Park. Members of the public are invited to attend the ribbon-cutting ceremony on Saturday, August 2, at 10 AM to celebrate the start of operations at the new facility.
