FACS' Fourth Annual Sustainability Champions Awards is scheduled to take place as an online/virtual ceremony on Wednesday, June 2, 2021 at 5:00 p.m. Eastern time.

We have five incredible champions who have made significant contributions towards the FACS mission of creating moral and equitable solutions to climate change in Northern Virginia. We're also honored to have the Rev. Dr. Jim Antal as our keynote speaker for the awards ceremony. All are welcome to celebrate our Sustainability Champions!

FACS + SEEK

In April, the Sustainable Energy, Equity and Knowledge-Sharing (SEEK) Project hosted a webinar for anyone interested in #NetZero for a critical step -- measuring your carbon footprint. Listen here if you missed it or want to listen again. (use the passcode: 18f7Hb%V) and view the slides from the EPA Energy Star Portfolio Manager Overview presentation here. In May, there will be two workshops where faith communities can receive free assistance to complete their carbon footprint measurement. Learn more and sign up to attend.

Faith Community Spotlight

One of Peace Lutheran Church’s Guiding Principles is “We promote love and justice for all God's creation.” In living out this principle, the congregation is dedicated to preserving our earth and environment for future generations. As part of Peace’s long-term improvement plan, “Peace for the Future”, the church undertook a major project to reduce its carbon footprint, save resources, and aid in the fight against global warming. In April, Peace joined FACS’ Tree of Life campaign and committed to becoming Net Zero. The next step for Peace is to formally create a Green Team and develop a plan.

Ardell Hoveskeland and Pastor Sarah Scherschligt have worked with local company Ipsun Solar to implement the John Clark Solar Power system.

This June, Peace will cover the sanctuary roof with 189 solar panels! The solar panel project originated with long-time church member John Clark and is named in memory of him. Once completed, the John Clark Solar Power system will produce about 80 thousand kilowatt hours of electric power for the Dominion Power electrical grid each year. The annual power production will be about 6 thousand KWH more than the property will be using, resulting in a monthly electric bill credit. The John Clark Solar Project is the equivalent of taking 280 vehicles off the road, replacing their energy consumption and pollution with clean solar power produced by God’s sun.
