Fifth Annual Sustainability Champions Awards

Celebrate five champions who have made significant contributions towards FACS' mission of creating moral and equitable solutions to climate change in Northern Virginia. You're invited to arrive early for a tour of Rock Spring United Church of Christ's impressive sustainability achievements and see environmental justice in action (tours begin at 6:30 p.m.). Masks are required indoors. The ceremony will begin at 7:00 p.m. in Carpenter Hall.

Innovative Food Re-Distribution: Tafel, Germany

Please join us June 9th, 2022 from 12:00pm to 1:00pm for a discussion with Bastian Nadj of Tafel, in Stuttgart, Germany about sustainable surplus food redistribution in his region and potential applications of lessons to Northern Virginia.  (Note: this event was originally scheduled in April.)

FACS Book Discussion: World of Wonders

Join us via zoom on June 23rd at 6pm to discuss World of Wonders: In Praise of Fireflies, Whale Sharks, and Other Astonishments. This book promises to bring you joy and sustenance. We look forward to seeing you and sharing our thoughts with each other! 

This event is 20s-30s friendly -  all are welcome to attend, no matter how much of the book you read.

Fairfax County Hub Updates

Lee District now has a new team leader: Ray Martin! Ray has volunteered with FACS for several years, and stepped into re-starting the Lee District group when he moved there. His team met with Supervisor Rodney Lusk for the first time in May, and was delighted to hear that Lusk supports a new position of county Chief Sustainability Officer. He also understands the urgency of carbon reduction.

There are many community events coming in June, including Juneteenth Celebrations: come visit our table, or better yet, volunteer to meet your neighbors!

City of Alexandria Hub Updates

Climate win in the adopted City budget! The City of Alexandria created a new $1.85 million climate fund for new energy and resilience programs starting in July. The City Manager is also looking at designating a climate point person within City Hall. Many thanks to FACS ALX supporters, other local climate advocates, and City Council members and the Mayor for organizing to make climate a priority.  

The Alexandria hub will not have a regular monthly meeting in June so members can attend the FACS sustainability awards on Thursday, June 16. But we are going to schedule an in-person social get-together and meeting sometime in June or July. Stay tuned and sign up for updates if you're not already on our list. 

Northern Valley Hub Updates

The Northern Valley Climate Solutions hub had its first meeting on May 1, 2022 and had a productive brainstorming session. Next steps include enhancing our recycling efforts, taking steps toward increasing energy efficiency of our faith communities, and exploring the possibility of solar panel installations.
