Dear friends,

Faith Alliance for Climate Solutions (FACS) not only helps faith communities develop local solutions to the climate crisisβ€”we equip people who care with advocacy tools so that they can help lead the charge. We are thrilled to unveil our 2021 Fairfax to Zero Social Media Toolkit.

What is Fairfax to Zero?

Our ambitious Fairfax to Zero campaign comprises eleven advocacy priorities for the county, our public schools, and the state. The desired outcome of these priorities is to reduce greenhouse gases emitted in the county, reaching carbon neutrality by 2050, if not sooner.

What is the toolkit and how will this be used?

The social media toolkit is a helpful resource to help guide individuals and/or groups of people who care about the planet to take faith-based action. It distills information from our more comprehensive report into bite-sized pieces of education and attainable solutions for catalyzing change and influencing policymakers.

How can I help?

  • Follow FACS on social media (Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter).
  • Read through the key takeaways for the four advocacy priorities we have in the toolkit at this time. Do any speak to you? Are all meaningful? How are the issues and desired outcomes connected to your faith?
  • Read tactics for faith-based action and determine the extent to would like to get involved. When you take action, share it on social media, tag FACS, and use the hashtags suggested in the toolkit. We would love to see what you’re doing!
  • Find the digital assets and sample messages we have already created for you (more information is in the toolkit). Download images/videos and share on your own social media platform(s) so that we can all unify and amplify our voices. You’ll see us posting on our channels as well, and feel free to retweet/repost, like, and/or comment. We wanted to give you the flexibility to post the graphics/messages based on your own timeline and maybe even in conjunction with your own priorities.
  • Read the tactics that FACS suggests for Fairfax County and state legislators. If you feel inspired to join us in advocacy efforts, you’ll already know what the issues are and our proposed solutions.
  • If you haven’t already done so, sign up for our FREE 2021 Virtual Advocacy Workshop and Training (happening this Thursday, January 7!).

When is this happening?

There’s no better time than now! The 2021 Virginia General Assembly convenes on January 13, and Fairfax County conducts their budget hearings in April, so between now and then we’ll be using faith-based advocacy to educate local officials, county staff, and the general public on the issues at hand, why they matter, and what’s at stake if climate action is ignored.

I saw something about a contest!

Who says advocacy can’t be fun? Tackling a problem as large as the climate crisis often means thinking outside the box, and we thought a design contest would be an enjoyable way to get your creative juices flowing. Feel free to submit as an individual or as an entire faith community. Here are the rules of the contest:

  • We accept videos, drawings/paintings/collages or other artwork (just snap a photo and keep your original), graphic design, etc.
  • Multiple submissions are allowed!
  • To submit an entry, email me directly at natalie@faithforclimate.org or throw your design up on social media (please be sure to tag @FaithForClimate and let us know that it’s a submission either within the post/tweet or in a separate email).
  • All ages and faiths are encouraged to apply!
  • As part of a submission, you grant us permission to use your submitted graphic/artwork.
  • The deadline to submit entries is Friday, March 12. The winning design will be announced on Thursday, April 1.
  • The winning design will be featured on FACS' social media, in a FACS' newsletter, and at FACS' Sustainability Awards.

Thank you for your support of FACS and our initiatives, and we are glad to have you at our side as we change the world.
